Copper

Practiced by skilled artisans in Himanchal Pradesh, this metal craft employs several handmade techniques to achieve the desirable form of the design object. Copperware craft was traditionally used in vessels and musical instruments given its health bene-fits.The artisan begins by crafting a base which is later subjected to heat in a kiln - softening the metal such that it can be moulded to a proper shape. Once removed from the kiln, the object is beaten to perfection to achieve the desired form. The individual pieces are later fused together using a similar technique. Known for their reddish hue and lustre, tamarind and sand are used to achieve the desired finish. Through the metal’s unique physical properties, it can be skillfully moulded and turned into various shapes and sizes with varied textures - truly a celebration of fine craftsmanship.
